Winter Storm Day 2
January 5, 2025
Got absolutely nothing done all day except watch true crime on TV and write these four lines:
It's so cold that...
When I drink something hot,
before I finish it,it's not.
So much true crime on TV,
Thankful it's not about me
Living in a drafty place, just don't see the point of running up the heating bill while the outside just keeps pouring inside. This time of year it's always the same.
You know, there just must be days like this I guess. I mean we don't usually have a historic winter storm to stay inside for, for about 48 hours.
I think I might actually be finding out what "cabin fever" `is. As much as I enjoyed staying in, in my pajamas all day, and I didn't have much of an urge to do anything outside, except to open the doors in front and back for a photo, I will say if roads had not been so hazardous, I might have gotten out just to get out, you know, for a little change of pace. Of course, if I had done that, I would have had to get dressed.
We had a record 14" of snow in Topeka today, I see, the most we've had since 15.2" on Jan. 9, 1993, and 17.3" on Feb. 27, 1900, according to the National Weather Service.
I did learn that the woman who shot and killed Selena in 1993, I think, is applying for parole and I guess she'll find out on March 25, something like that. The Oxygen wevsite had some short videos about her, saying she wants to "set the record straight" about "Selena's secrets" and their relationship. She's a pathological liar, I think.
She certainly doesn't have any reason to be paroled, I don't believe. She just sounds like a regular old criminal to me, the stuff she says, hoping to gain sympathy. No, she deserves no sympathy. She needs to stay locked up. Doesn't even show any remorse or humility, just like a regular old convict, trying to get us to think something different about what she did. I guess I missed Oxygen's documentary; it ran last February. And I have to pay or buy something to see it, and it's not worth it to me. I spend enough money on necessities, and that is not a necessity.
I only discovered Selena after she had been killed, when I taught Spanish at McMinn County High School in Athens, Tennessee, fall of 1997.But she was a wonderful person, apparently, and certainly had an amazing talent. Just to think she died 30 years ago, it's hard to wrap my mind around. She would have been 53 if she hadn't been cut down by that awful woman. What a tragedy.
Well, no school tomorrow. I was really hoping (and praying) for a snow day. Even when they get the main roads cleared it's always dangerous on the side roads. Very dangerous.
Sometimes there must be days where you just need to unwind, and maybe that's the kind of day it was meant to be, and with one more snow day, what more could I ask for?
Got no reading done, though. So I still want to do that. Reading Churchill. Some of it is a little hard for me to grasp but still his writing is so beautiful and the way his mind works is so awesome, that I keep going. It may take months to finish both those books at this rate, not counting the times I read something else for a brain break.
I'm not saying Churchill is hard to read, he isn't. It's just so much history that is all new to me, so I just try to kind of read between the lines, if that makes sense. What can I take away from reading this, not just to say I read it and got nothing out of it.
I am going to close. This has been a very strange day for me. Church was cancelled, which takes up a good piece of my Sunday mornings, usually. But it was relaxing, and I can't complain about that.
I don't have any great insights or huge inspiration to share with you tonight, sorry to say, but I just believe there are times to just persevere and take things easy and be grateful for it.
I am grateful for the nice jazzy music playing on a video in the background, an antenna for my TV set, no need for cable, and old TV shows if I want to watch them. Can't go back to 40-50 years ago when things were simpler, but I think we can simplify things, even if we can't go back in time.
On Sunday I get to read the Psalms. This week it was Psalms 5-9. I highlighted some verses in Psalm 9 that I think are very relevant for the time we are living in.
"The nations have sunk down in the pit which they made;
In the net which they hid, their own foot is caught.
The Lord is known by the judgment He executes;
The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands.
Meditation.
Selah" (Psalm 9:15-16)

So I will trust the Lord with all the craziness that's going on in the world, and be thankful that he has kept me and is keeping me. I will rejoice in the day that he has made. And not worry about tomorrow. It will worry about itself. So, goodnight. Stay safe and warm. Until next time.
