The Meanings of Songs
I sang a song in fifth grade with a friend. We sang it for a talent show. I don't remember us having any accompaniment. It was a hit by Patience and Prudence called "Tonight, You Belong to Me." It's so funny because I don't think for a moment we thought it was about someone being unfaithful to their current girlfriend by staying all night with their old girlfriend, but I wonder now, in retrospect, what adults are thinking, exposing children to all of this. Just a thought.
I know for some people music is just music, or so they say. They like the sound or they like to dance to it. Personally, I rarely understand the words to songs I hear anyway, or at least I only understand a few, maybe the hook, maybe parts of the chorus. There's no doubt that music has a power all its own.
Music can make you sad or happy without words at all. Songs from the past evoke memories.
This evening I'm singing some of my old country love songs to a group of ladies who know all the words. But I am bringing a friend along who is going to sing some songs I don't even know. And we're going to sing some songs together. I am looking forward to it.
The young friend I'm bringing with me is my favorite singer. She is not famous, but I would rather listen to her than any famous singers. Perhaps you know someone like that too.
The song I mentioned above also has special meaning for her. This is another thing that is lovely about music. Some people call it magic, some people call it synchronicity. I call it providence. That brought us together.
I also believe there is a place called heaven where people will be completely free to enjoy music the way God intended it to be enjoyed as worship to our Creator at increasing levels of intricacy and beauty.
That's just what I believe. I believe music was created not just for our enjoyment but for our appreciation of the creative power that made it all possible, including life itself.
I don't believe music is God, and it does not merit worship, even though there was a time I thought it was my life. It was not my life. It was something to enjoy but it was not my life.
I am closing for the moment. Going to go over some music in a few minutes.
