You're Either Being a Jerk Behind the Wheel or You're Not
I just put a book in my giveaway box after I found it wanted me to give up everything I like to eat and become a vegetarian. I didn't know that about that book that had been living in my room for years. It's about the health benefits of natural apple cider vinegar with the "mother" in it, and I have finally discovered this information, which is impossible for me to do.
I will not become a vegetarian, for one thing, and I will not give up black tea with milk and sugar, which, with an English mother, I have been drinking every day of my life since I was two. So, no, that will not be happening either.
The radio preachers tell me the world is watching me. Well, I hope they are not looking too closely. I mean if I am supposed to evangelize people by my example, I am sorry to say that, though I am living for Jesus every day, I don't believe that many people who work with me every day see a whole lot of difference between me and people who don't live for Jesus every day.
I mean I do love my co-workers, and I hope they get that from me. I admire them, I respect them, I smile at them, I enjoy working with them and serving them. I work with many very nice, moral, well-behaved, respectable people, and they simply not going to be saved by watching my life. That's about as far from reality as me becoming a vegetarian and swearing off black tea with milk and sugar.
That does not mean that I don't think it's important how a believer lives their life. Of course that is important. I just get a little weary of hearing, "They're watching you." I will say it gives me pause when I realize people are watching how we react in traffic, things like that, but I am not sure people are aware of your relationship with God based on the way you drive. You're either being a jerk behind the wheel or you're not.
Sometimes I think these full-time, professional people who preach on the radio and TV must sometimes run out of things to talk about, and they have to keep something going so they can have a broadcast (or a podcast) every day. So, if they say everyone is watching me, I say I am listening to them. Anyway, I am listening to hear a message not from a radio preacher who says things like that all the time.
You may have heard about the prophet God spoke to through a donkey, well, that just means if you're open to hearing the voice of God, you will hear from him no matter where it comes from, and, that is true, whether or not I like to hear about my driving.
I'm not getting a whole lot of readership with these writings of mine (I have discovered they are essays, and I, therefore, am going to call myself an "essayist" now), and because this is a church night, and I really don't have anything more to say for the moment, I am going to close for now.
I don't know what God is saying to you, I only know what he's saying to me, but if you are interested, you will find out that he will speak to you. If you're not interested, that is a different matter, entirely, although I would not rule out hearing from him even if you don't want to.
In any case, remember this, what I said before, "You are either being a jerk behind the wheel or you're not." It will not be the determining factor as to whether people are going to judge all religious people by your behavior. Still, it would be a good idea if you do think about being the best driver you can be. As they used to say in the olden days, "The life you save may be your own."
I think my spin on it is another way of saying the same thing, really.
