'You Are the Light of the World'

So, here we are in a world filled with war, corruption, violence, hatred, murder, conflict and suffering of every kind, and yet people still choose to not believe in God. They still think they know better than him. It's amazing to me. Jesus is the Light of the World. He said it. It is not what anybody said about him. He said it about himself. "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life" (John 8:12) (I am quoting from the King James Bible tonight. because I'm using my Spurgeon Bible.) And then he says believers are the light of the world, that is, followers, disciples of Jesus: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid" (Matthew 5:14) So, with these words he has told us what our function is in this world that is spiritually blind and soaked in sin. "Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 5:15-16). So, since Jesus is the light of the world and I am the light of the world, I have seen what my job is in this world because he has said it, and it is very clear, perhaps not in the specifics. The specifics I will have to find out from him every day as I walk with him. It's Wednesday afternoon, I'm going to church in a minute. That is the word for today. Follow Jesus. He is the light of the world, and if you are his, you are the light of the world. Every day you are alive, you are a light. In conclusion, here is a quote from Spurgeon: "There is no way of seeing God until the heart is renewed by sovereign grace." There is no way for the lost to see God without his grace revealing it to them. May our light so shine before us that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. This is our purpose.
