Does Anybody Care?

I remember many years ago someone I worked for thought it was real smart to say to people something to the effect of, "You must be mistaking me for someone who cares." Come to think of it, it might have been on a T-shirt. I don't know why I have remembered that, but every time I think of it, it kind of bothers me. The person who said it had a tendency to be a little rough around the edges, you could say. This person was the band leader of a band I was playing in. I admired her greatly and wanted her to approve of me, which she did, in general, but I often got the impression she was being defensive with people. This person had another business and she was very good at what she did. She was a shop owner and a shop keeper and a band leader who played the bass and had a lot of status among the musicians in the community and around the country in places where we played when we went on the road. She was also a wife and mother. I never really figured out what the chip on her shoulder was about but she seemed to have one that she sort of defied some people to try to knock off. She was usually not rough with me and she liked me, and I wish she were still living in this world and I hope she made it into heaven. She called a drummer we had for a short while "the Jesus freak," but she didn't really mean it in a disparaging way, that was just what she called someone like that. I don't remember that part about him, and I wonder if she knows now that I am a "Jesus freak." I hope she was one. Some people feel like they have to hide their spirituality. She did say one time that she thought it was a good thing to get to know your Creator. Back then I was in kind of a spiritual hinterland, and we didn't talk about God that much. We mostly just practiced and performed music. So, back to the subject of caring. Doesn't everyone want to feel like others care about them? Isn't that something we can offer to people? And if we honestly don't think we do care about other people, maybe we should repent of that. I kind of like that expression, "People don't care about how much you know until they know how much you care." I think sometimes we forget that.
