There Was a Dream
There was a dream
It was so real
There were people who came visiting
There were plans to go somewhere, do something, later
But first someone had asked me to go open the garage door
To let a trailer in
There was a guy
He had a handsome profile, a chiseled nose
Brown hair maybe, cut like mine
Fitting beside me somehow
He said words to the effect of did I want to do whatever people were going to do with him later
I said yes
I remember a warm arm around my shoulder
But first I had to figure out how to open the garage door
To let a trailer in
As I was going outside, I saw my mother getting out of a car, coming in
She was very blond, very young, and very beautiful
She went in the door next to where I was leaving
I saw her lying on the floor as if so exhausted from traveling,
I don’t remember any luggage, any furniture; just her
I walked in, she sat up and said, “Hi, Honey!”
I said, “I want you to meet somebody.”
But first, I had to figure out how to open the garage door
To let the trailer in
As I was outside, suddenly, somehow, I was in mid-air crossing a great chasm, falling
There were people down below and buildings and sidewalks and streets
I decided when I fell, I would simply roll
And I did that
I remember telling people that’s how you do it; you just roll
I don’t remember opening the garage door or letting the trailer in
But when I went back inside, I looked everywhere for that person who had been there
But couldn’t find him
I didn’t have his number or anything
I was going to keep looking for him when I started to wake up
But I was in my bed in my room and it gradually dawned on me
That none of it had really happened
But it had been so real
I really expected it all to be there when I woke up
