School's Out for Summer
Today was the last day of school before summer break.
One thing I found out I have in common with a sixth grader: the first item on the agenda for summer is sleep. Two things come to mind when I think about this. First, I am not just dreaming of sleeping in because of my age, and second, I always wanted to be a professional student, and this is the way I have achieved it
I didn't think of it that way in the beginning. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a literacy tutor. I am a person who loved going to school, especially when I got to college and got three degrees, a B.S., an M.S. and a Ph. D. While I was teaching college it was not so much like being a professional student, it was more like being stretched and stressed for 55 hours a week.
I'm just saying, this has worked out great. I just completed 11 years as a literacy tutor, and I just love this way of making a living, I guess primarily because it is like being a professional student. I'm learning all the time and I'm helping people learn, and it's almost perfect.
As much as I love it, I can't minimize the importance of the time off, and it won't be nearly as much fun if they start with the 12-month school year. Already, summer vacation is only about 66% what it used to be, going back the second week of August. That just doesn't seem quite right, but, nonetheless, it is a great life. I highly recommend it.
I am looking forward to sleeping in, staying up late, reading and doing some decluttering, and I will keep you abreast of anything else that is on my mind during this time. Meanwhile, it is my midweek church gathering. And I have to leave in just a few minutes. More later.
