The Pope Said This?
Thousands of people are sharing what Pope Francis said: "It is not necessary to believe in God to be a good person." True, and the point is? "In a way the traditional notion of God is outdated." And what might that be, please? "One can be spiritual but not religious." Seems like I've heard that somewhere before..."It is not necessary to go to church and give money - for many, nature may be a church." Not necessary for what and how are you defining "church"? "Some of the best people in the world do not believe in God and some of the worst deeds were done in His name." Now we know why he's so popular. This reads like a new age tract if I ever saw one. So, how does one answer this? The first thing that I said when I heard it was, "Sounds like he's just trying to make everyone feel good about dying and going to hell." Maybe I could have thought it through a bit. I was actually dumbfounded and what I said might not be far from the truth, but I do not want to be dismissive and I don't want to alienate people. But this is my response.
"For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear." 2 Timothy 4:3
"Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit." Matthew 15:14
16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
17 "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."
18 "He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."
