The Jesus Prayer
The Jesus Prayer:
Found the following online. Was thinking about it. Learned about shortly after I was saved:
The Eastern prayer of the heart, the Jesus Prayer, says: 'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' Many Christians, such as St Joan of Arc, have died with the one word 'Jesus' on their lips."
Oh, to find the humility required these days to utter such a prayer. But of course, we are "modern" Christians and we are so super spiritual that, heaven forbid that we should think of ourselves as sinning any more (having a "sin consciousness"?).
Sorry, this is a huge pet peeve of mine. We go from one extreme to the other, we "modern" Christians. We're afraid if we admit that the Holy Spirit convicts us when we sin (because we are in the process of being sanctified but are still growing...) that we are therefore "wallowing" in a "poor old sinner saved by grace" mentality.
Can we not find a balance? We ARE sinners saved by grace, for goodness' sake, but not JUST sinners saved by grace. We are also "saints," the Bible says. The point is how are we treating others?
