Phrases we can do without

Well, I see I have not posted an entry a week like I said I would try to do. I have written a few emails and made some journal entries. In an email to Roger Hubert, I made a list of phrases I can do without. Maybe I shouldn't say "we." Please forgive me if any of these are favorites of yours. That's why we're all different. Here are a few:

1. "I said that to say this..." (Why don't you just say it; do we really need the preface?)
2. "That said..." (We know you said it, just get to the point.)
3. "as well..." (I read that one in Mike Hall's column in the Capital-Journal and agreed with him; why not just say "too" or "also?" What does "well" have to do with it?
4. "Truth be told..." (Why wouldn't you tell the truth?)
5. "In the final analysis..." (OK, so you really have the "final analysis"...)
6. "I'm so glad to see 'each and every one of you'" here tonight." (Redundant... and probably a lie)
And here's my all-time favorite:
7. "Everything happens for a reason..."  (I guess that's supposed to communicate either how wise or spiritual the person is who said it; yet, it actually communicates nothing.)

So, there you go.

Love, Carolyn
